Business Sydney has taken an active interest in the future of the Pyrmont Peninsula for many years. While we have members who are significant land holders in the precinct and have been active in the Western Harbour Alliance, the principal motivation for our interest stems from a strong view that Pyrmont has role to play in an expanded CBD, providing much needed commercial, tourism and cultural floor space. Sydney’s constrained CBD is Australia’s premier business district and an important generator of our national wealth. To continue to support our growing population, create jobs and attract business investment the CBD needs room to grow, generate capacity, and deliver quality amenity to attract talent and support tourism and hospitality.

Business Sydney appreciates the opportunity to review the draft Bays West Strategy and congratulates the Government on the comprehensive and considered planning process, they have undertaken in bringing forward this new precinct in Sydney.

In responding to the draft Strategy, this submission follows the structure of the Strategy itself- Vision, Key Directions, Big Moves and Structure Plan. We deal with each in turn.

In that light Business Sydney welcomes the opportunity to comment on the draft Design and Place SEPP. We support the Government’s efforts to streamline and simplify the current planning regulations controlling new developments while improving quality and sustainability in NSW. The Chamber is supportive of recent efforts to remove unnecessary ‘red-tape’ as a way of stimulating the NSW economy and we value the Government’s approach to likewise do so with this SEPP.

The Chamber values the opportunity to comment on the amendments to the Sydney Harbour National Park Plan of Management. Sydney Harbour is the most iconic and portrays some of the most recognisable images of Australia that is presented to the world. Sydney Harbour and its natural environment plays a central role in the economic, social, and environmental fabric of our City and is critically important for the NSW visitor economy.

Submission - Open and Creative Planning Reforms (18 Nov 2020)

Sydney Business Chamber has taken an active interest in the future of the Pyrmont Peninsula for many years. While we have members who are significant land holders in the precinct and have been active in the Western Harbour Alliance, our principle motivation for our interest in the precinct stems from a long held concern that Sydney’s CBD is too constrained and that its economic potential is being held back by a shortage of suitable floor space. The Sydney CBD is Australia’s premier business district and an important generator of our national wealth. To continue to support our growing population, create jobs and attract business investment the CBD must enable growth, generate capacity, and deliver quality amenity to attract talent and support tourism and hospitality.

The Chamber has been a longstanding supporter of the Sydney Metro West project and the Government is to be commended for progressing this critically important extension of Sydney’s transport network. Connectivity between Sydney’s two largest centres - Sydney’s CBD and Parramatta – has been a growing problem over recent decades.
