with the Hon David Harris MP, NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty
EVENT PARTNER
Business Sydney, in partnership with Supply Nation proudly hosted a breakfast event to mark the launch of the new report The Sleeping Giant Rises: Understanding the social value created by Indigenous business and its contribution to Closing the Gap.
Held at the beginning of NAIDOC Week, the gathering served as a timely and meaningful celebration of First Nations achievement, resilience, and leadership. The Welcome to Country was given by Aunty Joan Bell.
The event highlighted the increasing economic and social impact of Indigenous enterprises and the importance of recognising their pivotal role in advancing self-determination, community wellbeing, and national reconciliation goals.
The Hon. David Harris MP, NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, delivered a special address, reaffirming the NSW Government’s commitment to creating opportunities and partnerships with Indigenous businesses across the state.
This was followed by Supply Nation CEO, Kate Russell, who presented the findings of the new report, which expands on the original Sleeping Giant publication by offering a richer and more nuanced analysis of the broader social value generated by Indigenous businesses. The report reinforces the idea that Indigenous enterprises are not only commercially successful but also deeply rooted in cultural strength, community connection, and nation-building.
A compelling panel discussion followed, facilitated by Jennifer Mar Young, Executive Director of Community Partnerships at Aboriginal Affairs NSW. The panel featured Monica Barone, CEO of the City of Sydney, Jason Ardler PSM, Founding Director of Thirriwirri and Associate Professor (Adjunct); and Joshua Gilbert, Assistant Director at the Centre for Indigenous People and Work, UTS.
Each shared unique insights on the intersection between policy, academia, community, and business. Their perspectives underscored the importance of sustained collaboration, inclusive economic participation, and respect for Indigenous knowledge in shaping a more equitable future.
The vote of thanks was moved by Tess Phillips, Executive GM - Corporate Affairs, JC Decaux.
The strong turnout reflected the growing recognition of the vital role Indigenous businesses play in driving economic and social progress, and underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in advancing the Closing the Gap agenda.
