Business Sydney in conjunction with our Business NSW colleagues and the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ACCI), was pleased to host the Deputy Leader of the Opposition at a special business breakfast. Ms Ley is also Shadow Minister for Women, Industry, Skills and Training and Small and Family Business. Prior to her political career, she was a commercial pilot, farmer and public servant based in Albury NSW. In her address, Ms Ley said she was prepared to stand up for small business and knew from personal experience the challenges of running a family business. She related a life-changing encounter in staring down a bank manager who had talked down the survival chances of a family farm business in the Riverina that had been impacted by bad government policy decisions. Ms Ley spoke of her frustration, fury and determination to fight on, noting that her son is now the fifth generation of the family on the farm. Ms Ley said she was aware of the impact of the current cost-of-living crisis and that people share with her their efforts to make ends meet. She also pointed out that business costs had been driven up and that there is anger in relation to energy costs and high insurance premiums. Ms Ley was introduced by newly appointed Business NSW President, Joseph Carrozzi AM, and happily answered questions from Business NSW CEO, Daniel Hunter. Over 100 business leaders were in attendance. Marika Calfas, CEO, NSW Ports moved the Vote of Thanks. |
