At this very special breakfast, Business Sydney members and guests celebrated International Women's Day 2024 and its theme Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.

At this breakfast, Ms Allegra Spender MP, the Independent Federal Member for Wentworth, outlined her experiences as a woman in political life, the barriers for women in accelerating progress and the importance of encouraging women and celebrating their successes in business and life.

Following Ms Spender’s address, she joined Kristy Edser, Managing Partner - Sydney, MinterEllison in an inspiring panel discussion with Princess Ventura, Regional Director NSW, Urbis and Liz Hughes, CEO, National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). The panel spoke about their experiences and how they are creating positive impacts for the status and inclusion of women, both in the corporate world and in everyday life. 

The vote of thanks was moved by Judith Field, Non-executive Director, Business NSW. 

Cindy Carpenter, Chair, The Bread & Butter project presented Allegra with hot cross buns baked by refuges and asylum seekers, who aspire to become bakers in Australia.

ALLEGRA SPENDER MP

Independent Federal Member for Wentworth

Allegra Spender is the Independent Member for Wentworth. She was elected in May 2022 on a platform climate action, political integrity, future-focused economic reform, gender equity and decency.

Allegra went to Ascham School in Edgecliff, has an Economics degree from Cambridge University, an MSc from the University of London, and has completed business courses at Harvard and Dartmouth College.

Before parliament, Allegra worked as a business analyst at McKinsey, a policy analyst with UK Treasury and was later the Managing Director at Carla Zampatti Pty Ltd. Allegra was also the chair of the Sydney Renewable Power Company and CEO of the Australian Business and Community Network, which addresses educational disadvantage by partnering low socio-economic schools with leading Australian businesses.

As an MP, Allegra has taken a leading role within the crossbench on climate action. This has included through the legislation of targets for reducing Australia’s CO2 emissions, strengthened reforms to the safeguard mechanism, and investment in electrifying and decarbonizing households. Allegra has also been driving future-focused economic reform, by initiating her own tax review process and putting forward a citizens’ assembly to break the political impasse on housing policy. Allegra has also successfully advocated for the establishment of a National Anti-Corruption Commission, greater investment in women’s economic empowerment, and a more humane approach to the treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum.

Kristy provides strategic advice regarding the ever changing landscape of workplace relations, workplace transformation as well as assisting employers to investigate and to respond to claims, including in respect of conduct, sexual harassment or whistle-blower allegations.

Kristy also has deep expertise as a corporate trainer developing bespoke training workshops for her clients on workplace compliance matters and she regularly briefs leadership teams and Boards on workplace issues such as Respect@Work.

Kristy is passionate about the importance of supportive leadership in fostering an inclusive, diverse and safe culture in organisations.

LIZ HUGHES

Chief Executive Officer, National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)

As NIDA’s CEO since December 2019, Liz has led NIDA’s operations, strategic positioning and ensured NIDA continues to build on its world-renowned creative education while embracing opportunities of disruption.

Liz is a positive transformational leader and change-maker, specialising in collaboration and partnerships. She is committed to harnessing the unique qualities of NIDA’s education, making it accessible and inclusive for talented individuals, and extending the possibilities of the performing arts in all its guises across stages, screens and beyond.

 

Liz has held numerous other arts leadership roles including positions in the higher education sector, as part of public programs, in remote Indigenous communities and as a board director. She is also an award-winning filmmaker.

PRINCESS VENTURA

Regional Director NSW, Urbis

Princess is an economist and project manager with over 20 years of international and local experience.

Throughout her career, Princess has studied and worked in the Philippines, the United States, Sri Lanka and Australia. Prior to Urbis, she was an Economist for several years for The World Bank in international development. Here she advised policy makers on the design and implementation of reforms in a variety of economic spheres and conducted economic and policy analysis.

In her role of Property, Economics and Research Director and Regional Director NSW at Urbis, Princess applies the same expertise in economic research and analysis to help clients make evidence-based decisions to design places that work.
