50 DAYS TO GO UNTIL THE BMW AUSTRALIAN PGA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sydney was buzzing recently with excitement as Business Sydney and the PGA of Australia brought together more than 100 business leaders for a special reception celebrating 50 days to go until the BMW Australia PGA Championship returns to Sydney for the first time in nearly 30 years.

It was a huge success and an important event for Sydney, our visitor economy, local businesses and the overall wellbeing and vibrancy of our wonderful city.

The prestigious Championship will return to The Lakes Golf Club for the first time since 1987, providing a fantastic opportunity to showcase Sydney to a national and international audience. Major sporting events like this deliver significant benefits for tourism, hospitality, accommodation, retail and other local businesses, while bringing people into our city and creating a real sense of excitement.

We were delighted to hear from Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia, who shared insights into the Championship’s highly anticipated return, followed by The Hon Steve Kamper MP, NSW Minister for Sport, who spoke about the significance of the event and the opportunities it presents for Sydney.

An outstanding panel featured:

• Peter Lonard – Australian PGA Champion (2002, 2004 and 2007)
• Peter O’Malley – Past PGA of Australia Chair
• Antonia Beggs – General Manager of Major Events and Operations, PGA of Australia

The discussion was expertly facilitated by Sally Loane AM, Chair of Destination NSW, exploring the importance of major sporting events to Sydney’s visitor economy and what fans and visitors can look forward to.

Finally, thank you Caroline Searcy, the Deputy Chair of Australian Turf Club for giving the vote of thanks.

With the BMW Australian PGA Championship once again opening the DP World Tour season, and international golfing stars including Adam Scott, Cameron Smith and Corey Conners set to take to the fairways, Sydney is in for a very special summer of golf.

Congratulations to the PGA of Australia and everyone involved in bringing this prestigious championship back to Sydney. Thank you to all the business, sport and tourism leaders who joined us, and to our partners for making this event such a success.
