2025 British & Irish Lions Tour Reception with the Hon. Steve Kamper MP
NSW Minister for Sport
EVENT PARTNERs:
The British & Irish Lions tour is a major sporting event that delivers significant economic benefits to Sydney. Thousands of international and domestic fans travel to the city, spending heavily on accommodation, dining, transport, and entertainment. This influx of visitors boosts tourism, fills hotels, and drives business for restaurants, bars, and retailers—particularly those near match venues. Local shops also benefit from increased foot traffic and merchandise sales, especially of Lions and Wallabies gear. Ahead of this historic Australian tour, guests at this reception had the opportunity to hear exclusive insights into the team’s preparation from Lions Chief Executive Officer, Ben Calveley. Guests also heard from the Hon. Steve Kamper MP, NSW Minister for Sport, who gave a keynote address which focussed on the importance of the tour. After the Minister's address guests also heard a thought-provoking fireside discussion between Ben Calveley and Phil Waugh, Chief Executive Officer, Rugby Australia, on rugby, its future, commercial opportunities and the inaugural Lions Women’s Tour, which was moderated by Sally Loane, distinguished journalist and the first female Director of Waratahs Rugby in its 135-year history. The reception was an engaging evening with a dynamic exchange of insights supported by the Irish Consul-General, Rosie Keane and Ed Kitt, Deputy Consul-General, British Consulate in Sydney. |
