Business Sydney was proud to again collaborate with KARI Foundation and the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) to host our 3rd annual First Nations Forum and Lunch.
Over 110 business leaders joined us to hear the NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, The Hon. David Harris MP, The Hon. Jacqui Munro MLC (representing the Shadow Minister, Leslie Williams MP), and our insightful and expert panelists on two panels discussing how to implement impactful RAPs and harnessing the strength of Indigenous procurement.
The smoking ceremony conducted by Troy Dargan, Cr. Yvonne Weldon AM's Welcome to Country & the wonderful KARI Singers singing "You're the Voice" in indigenous language set the tone for an inspiring, uplifting and thought provoking event.
Business Sydney's Executive Director, Paul Nicolaou, and the Minister then presented ICC's CEO, Geoff Donaghy, with Business Sydney's inaugural "Sydney Champion" award, in recognition of his immense service and impact on Sydney over the last decade.
THE HON. DAVID HARRIS MP

Bio
David Harris is the State Member for Wyong and NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, Minister for Gaming and Racing, Minister for Veterans, Minister for Medical Research, and Minister for the Central Coast in the NSW Parliament.
David was re-elected to the NSW Parliament in the seat of Wyong in March 2019 and was appointed Shadow Minister for the Central Coast, Jobs Investmentand Tourism, Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty in April 2019.
David was Principal at Point Clare Public School on the NSW Central Coast from 2011-2015.
David was a Member of the NSW Parliament representing the seat of Wyong 2007 - 2011.
In that role, David served as;
- Deputy Chair of Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Committee
- Chair of Natural Resources (Climate Change) Committee
- Regional and Rural Broadband Committee
- Staysafe Committee
David was also Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Training and Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast.
As the Member for Wyong, David fought for the upgrade of Wyong Hospital including improved cancer facilities, the new Porters Creek Public School, two new ambulance stations and secured funding for the upgrade of the Pacific Highway through Wyong after a long community campaign.

THE HON. JACQUI MUNRO MLC

Bio
The Hon. Jacqui Munro MLC is a Member of Parliament in the NSW Upper House, elected in March 2023.
Ms Munro is the youngest Liberal woman to be elected to the NSW Legislative Council, and the NSW Liberal Party’s first LGBTQI+ woman Parliamentarian.
She is particularly passionate about supporting innovation for the state’s prosperity and developing that is equitable and sustainable for all residents.
Jacqui was a vocal campaigner for a Voice to Parliament and believes strongly that Indigenous Australians will be the architects of change for unacceptable statistics and all-too-many difficult lives, of which a strong economy and business collaboration are critical foundations for change.

This panel will explore how collaborative efforts and unwavering dedication from business and community leaders committed to Indigenous engagement, alongside the implementation of impactful RAPs, can drive significant positive change.
CASEY RALPH
KARI CEO
Bio
Casey is a proud Aboriginal woman with connections to the North and South Coasts of NSW. She has spent the majority of her life living on Gandangara Country in South Western Sydney.
Casey started her career working in education and in 2005 transitioned to working within the community welfare sector. She is now the current CEO of both KARI Ltd and KARI Foundation Ltd.
Casey is passionate about ensuring that Aboriginal children, families and communities have every opportunity afforded to them and is committed to designing and implementing innovative programs that empower, support and enhance skill development.
CR. YVONNE WELDON AM
Councillor, City of Sydney Council
Bio
Yvonne is an independent councillor and the first Aboriginal councillor in the City of Sydney's 180-year history. She was born and raised in inner Sydney but maintains strong ties to her Wiradjuri homelands of Cowra and the Riverina areas of New South Wales.
Yvonne has held numerous senior positions in NSW Government, non-government and Aboriginal controlled organisations working across health, human services, childcare, child protection, housing, disability services and Aboriginal heritage. She has served as the elected Chair of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, Deputy Chair of the NSW Australia Day Council and as a Board member of Domestic Violence NSW.
In 2022 Yvonne was recognised as the NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year and appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to the Aboriginal community. She also recently published her debut novel, Sixty-Seven Days.
LUKE CARROLL
Australian Actor & Television Personality
Bio
Luke Carroll is a seasoned theatre, film and television performer. Recent television projects include the Upright for Foxtel and Total Control for ABC.
On stage recent projects include 1Black Cockatoo for Ensemble Theatre; Black is the New White, The Harp in the South, The Hanging, The Battle of Waterloo and Cherry Pickers for STC; Black Diggers and Mother Courage and her Children for QTC, Eora Crossing for The Sydney Festival, Purple Dreams and My Girragundji for Bell Shakespeare and for STC.
Luke has a strong track record on screen; he was a nominee for the 2012 AACTA Award for ‘Best Guest or Supporting Actor in a TV Drama’ for his work on Redfern Now, nominated twice for AFI Awards for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for Australian Rules and ‘Best Supporting Actor’ in a TV series for R.A.N.
Luke’s other film credits include Strangerland, Needle, Stoned Bros, Subdivision, The Tender Hook and Children of the Revolution. For television, Luke’s credits include The Gods of Wheat Street, Redfern Now, Home and Away, R.A.N, The Alice, Stingers, All Saints, Water Rats, Heartbreak High, Man from Snowy River and The Flying Doctors. Luke has been a very proud member of the Playschool team for 10 years.
GEOFF DONAGHY
CEO, ICC Sydney
Bio
Geoff Donaghy is CEO of the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), which opened in December 2016 and was soon established as one of the world’s leading convention, exhibition and entertainment facilities.
He also serves as Group Director of Convention Centres Asia Pacific for leading venue management specialists, ASM Global. The Asia Pacific arm of the business, formerly AEG Ogden, operates major facilities in Australia, Asia and the Middle East.
Originally a school teacher with airline and hotel industry experience, Geoff headed the Cairns region’s tourism bureau for five years during its successful development of international visitation growth.
After advocating for its development, he was appointed to manage the 1996 opening of the Cairns Convention Centre, voted as the “World’s Best Congress Centre” in AIPC’s 2004 and 2014 APEX Awards. As CEO of Suncorp Stadium from 2003, he oversaw the redevelopment of the Brisbane’s 52,000 seat venue, recognised one of the world’s leading rugby venues, for AEG Ogden.
Geoff has also been part of the AEG global team in successful global venue management bids, which included the Los Angeles and Hawaii Convention Centres.
Geoff served two terms as President of the International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC) following several years as a board member and was their representative on peak global body, the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC), where he was a longstanding member of its executive committee.
In the five years from 2005, he served as Chair of local peak body, the Business Events Council of Australia (BECA), where he steered greater government recognition for the industry and has recently been reappointed to the board as Deputy Chair, to assist in driving industry advocacy initiatives during the COVID-19 crisis. During this period he was also appointed to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) Tourism Recovery Taskforce.
He has been a member of several industry and Government boards, including Queensland’s tourism and event corporations and was an inaugural director, then Chair of North Queensland’s world heritage rainforest management authority.
Geoff was awarded the Australia Centenary Medal by the Federal Government in 2001, the Australian industry’s Outstanding Contribution Award in 2009, the Joint Meeting Industry Council’s 2010 Global Power and Profile Award and the 2016 IMEX Academy Award for outstanding Asia Pacific industry service and has been a regular convention speaker and leading media spokesperson on business events industry matters. In 2021, Geoff was inducted into the USA based Events Industry Council’s Hall of Leaders – a prestigious international recognition program in the global meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry.
KAREN MUNDINE
CEO, Reconciliation Australia
Bio
Karen Mundine is from the Bundjalung Nation of northern NSW. As the CEO at Reconciliation Australia, Ms Mundine brings to the role more than 25 years’ experience leading community engagement, public advocacy, communications and social marketing campaigns. An architect of the landmark Australian Reconciliation Barometer, Ms Mundine works with governments, the business sector and civil society to advocate for change.
Over the course of her career, she has been instrumental in some of Australia’s watershed national events including the Apology to the Stolen Generations, Centenary of Federation commemorations, Corroboree 2000 and the 1997 and 2021 Australian Reconciliation Conventions.
Ms Mundine holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and was the winner of the 2021 Indigenous Australian UTS Alumni Award. In 2023 she was declared the National Winner of the Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership.
She is a Company Director of Gondwana Choirs, Sydney Festival, the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre (AILC), and Australians for Constitutional Recognition, and is a Member of Chief Executive Women.
Previous roles include: membership of the Australian Government’s Referendum Engagement Group; Director, Mary Mackillop Foundation; Deputy Chief Executive and General Manager Communication and Engagement, Reconciliation Australia; Senior Consultant, CPR Communications; and senior public affairs and communications roles with federal government departments including Prime Minister and Cabinet, Communications IT & the Arts, Health and Ageing, and Foreign Affairs and Trade.
JARRED HODGES
First Nations Strategic and Player Development Manager, Sydney Swans
Bio
Jarred is an accomplished Leader and Sports Coach and Health Education professional who is passionate about contributing to the empowerment and engagement of individual’s, communities and organisation’s by using his professional skills and experience through sport, business and education.
Jarred has held the position of First Nations Strategy and Player Development Manager for the Sydney Swans since 2022. Prior to the Swans he was the National First Nations Manager for Rugby Australia.
Jarrod is also a Board Member for the National Indigenous Culinary Institute, since 2017. He also previously held the position of NICI's CEO.
Panel 2 - Harnessing the Strength of Indigenous Procurement: Leveraging Inclusive Supply Chains, Driving Innovation, and Economic Growth
This panel will discuss the benefits of Indigenous procurement, from enhancing economic opportunities for Indigenous businesses and individuals to promoting cultural preservation and resilience.
SHANE HAMILTON
Deputy Secretary, Aboriginal Affairs NSW
Bio
Shane Hamilton is a Wakka Wakka and Bundjalung man from Queensland.
Shane Hamilton was appointed to the role of Deputy Secretary of Aboriginal Affairs in June 2022.
Shane has experience in the public and private sector and leadership roles in Aboriginal affairs.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy Secretary, Shane was the Managing Director of policy advisory firm Inside Policy and the co-founder and director of indigenous business First Nations Blockchain.
Previously, Mr Hamilton has worked as CEO of the Aboriginal Housing Office and Director of PwC Indigenous Consulting.
NYUNGGAI WARREN MUNDINE AO
Executive Chairman, Nyungga Black Group
Bio
Nyunggai Warren Mundine AO is a highly respected and influential businessman, political strategist and advocate for empowering the First Nations of Australia to build businesses and sustainable economies. His life and career have been shaped by a personal commitment to community and economic development. Warren has over four decades of experience working in the public, private and community sectors. He had advised successive Australian governments since 2004, including as Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council from 2013 to 2017. Warren is a member of the Bundjalung First Nation of Australia and a descendant of the Gumbaynggirr and Yuin First Nations of Australia.
GLENN JOHNSTON
Deputy Chair, Supply Nation
Bio
Glenn Johnston has over 25 years’ executive leadership experience in procurement and logistics management across different industries, market leading companies and government. He is currently Director of Procurement and Business Support at Infrastructure NSW, and is a member of the NSW Government Procurement Leadership Group.
Glenn is a nationally recognised procurement expert and thought leader with a deep and proud passion for Indigenous business development and engagement. By helping Indigenous businesses grow and develop, Glenn firmly believes that this will lead to greater opportunities for Indigenous employment and a more inclusive economy.
Glenn was the recipient of the 2016 Supply Nation Procurement Professional of the Year Award in recognition of his work developing and engaging Indigenous businesses. He is a Fellow (Chartered status) of CIPS and former Chair of the NSW Chapter of CIPS (2012-2023), the globally recognised peak procurement and supply professional body with over 120,000 members. Glenn is a Director and inaugural Chair of NSW Aboriginal Land Council Employment & Training Ltd (known as Yilabara) and Deputy Chair of Supply Nation. He is also a Director and Chair of Playgroup NSW and is the principal of Indigenous professional services organisation – Darug Consulting P/L. He is a former Board Member of the AIATSIS Foundation (2018-2024).
In August-September 2016, Glenn became a Jawun program secondee and spent 6 weeks living with the Aboriginal Community of Lockhart River (Far North Qld), considered to be the most remote Aboriginal Community in Australia. During this time, he helped the Mayor, CEO, Councillors, Elders and motivated locals develop a framework to enable less reliance on welfare and employment by the Council, through building small businesses with a goal of achieving self-determination though economic opportunities. Living with the Aboriginal Community also highlighted the importance of preserving the Indigenous culture through language, songlines, music, dance, and art.
As an advocate of life-long learning, Glenn is a Professor at UNSW School of Business, Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) and is responsible for designing and delivering MBA and executive courses with a distinct Aboriginal perspective.
Glenn is a Burramatta (Parramatta) man of the Dharug Nation of Western Sydney and still lives on traditional Dharug land in Glenhaven.
DI ELLIS
Senior Indigenous Affairs Manager, NRMA
Bio
As a proud Wiradjuri woman and a Senior Indigenous Affairs Manager at The NRMA, Di is passionate about advancing reconciliation and promoting cultural awareness and respect. Di has several years of experience in project management, program analysis, reporting, resource allocation, and staff supervision in various sectors, including construction, infrastructure, and public services.
Di has extensive expertise in developing and implementing Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs), which are strategic frameworks that outline the commitments and actions of organisations to contribute to reconciliation. Di has successfully delivered RAPs for The NRMA, BGIS, and Abt Associates, working with diverse stakeholders and partners, organising workshops and events, preparing technical reports, and creating impactful presentations.
Di also enjoys mentoring and empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths, especially those in custody, and sharing her knowledge and experience in diversity and inclusion, public speaking, and community engagement.

Bio
Cain has over a decade of experience as an executive leader, board director, and business owner.
Throughout his career, Cain has excelled at capitalising on investments, reducing costs, and increasing efficiency while prioritising sound governance and the implementation of procedures.
Cain's expertise in strategic and operational planning, policy advice, political connections, marketing and PR, administration, and motivation has been honed through leadership roles in not-for-profit, sporting, and commercially oriented organisations.
Cain holds a Master of Business Administration, majoring in Management, and additional qualifications in Business, HR, Management, Vocational Education & Training, and Sports Administration and Coaching.
