Today’s latest overheight truck fiasco blocking the Sydney Harbour Tunnel creating a 20-km traffic tailback must be the last, Business Sydney Executive Director Paul Nicolaou said.

“As it strives to recover from the pandemic, Sydney can no longer afford or tolerate any further overheight truck incidents blocking the Sydney Harbour Tunnel,” Mr Nicolaou said.

“Each of these incidents is a blow to a city economy that remains in recovery mode in addition to the social dislocation of repeated traffic snarls.

“The threat of big fines and loss of significant driver demerit points has failed to prevent the recurrence of these major disruptions.

“There is no choice now for the Minns Government other than to immediately ban large trucks of this kind from using the Sydney Harbour Tunnel under threat of even heavier penalties.

“The ban must stay in place at least until infrastructure and technology can be put in place to divert overheight vehicles well before they can reach a point that creates the havoc we have seen today.”
