Business Sydney executive director Paul Nicolaou said today:

“Business Sydney applauds new Arts Minister John Graham’s ambition for Sydney to have a West End-style theatre district.

We fully support this objective and we are also keen for the Government to appoint an Arts and Culture Commissioner to work with our city’s great arts and cultural institutions to deliver collaborative strategies and activations.

Sydney is already blessed with three perfect locations to fulfill the Minister’s theatre district ambition with the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park, Barangaroo and Walsh Bay as potential precincts.

In the case of the Entertainment Quarter, it is perfect timing because the current operators of EQ are looking for certainty from the government to open the way for the precinct’s redevelopment.”

Speaking in today’s Daily Telegraph, new Arts Minister John Graham said he would seek a meeting with major players in the theatre industry to discuss the “urgent” issue of the city’s patchwork of live theatre and performance venues.

He said concentrating the city’s theatres in a single area, as New York and London have done for centuries, made sense.
