As Australia navigates the most difficult geopolitical landscape in a generation, Business Sydney held a special briefing with two leading figures who shed light on the dynamics of a troubled world dominated by national security concerns, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the status of Australia’s relationship with the US, our most important ally.

Former Australian Ambassador to the US and co-founder of Bondi Partners, the Hon. Ambassador Joe Hockey (Ret.) and the 76th Secretary of the US Navy and Global Chair of Bondi Partners, The Hon. Secretary Richard V. Spencer (Ret.) gave their insights and context to the geopolitical currents that are shaping Australia’s response to challenges at home and in our region.  

They were joined by Erin Molan, host of The Erin Show, Sky News, who conducted a riveting Q&A session.

THE HON. AMBASSADOR JOE HOCKEY (RET.)

Former Australian Ambassador to the United States of America and Founding Partner & President, Bondi Partners

Before co-founding Bondi Partners, the Honourable Joe Hockey served as Australia’s Ambassador to the United States of America, taking up his posting in Washington in January 2016. Notably, Mr. Hockey was responsible for Australia’s relationship with the US during the final year of President Obama’s tenure and the first three years of President Trump’s term. As Ambassador, Mr. Hockey emphasised the importance of a free and fair trade and investment partnership between the US and Australia, while promoting innovative infrastructure investment throughout the US.

At Bondi Partners, Mr. Hockey spearheads the firm’s strategic direction in both the United States and Australia.

Previously, as the elected Treasurer of Australia, Mr. Hockey was responsible for all aspects of the Australian economy. With a reputation as a reformer, Mr. Hockey helped shape the modern financial system in Australia and had a major hand in the formation of industry policy, from tourism and hospitality to health and welfare.

In 2014, Mr. Hockey chaired the highly successful G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meetings. He initiated major infrastructure initiatives ranging from the implementation of asset recycling financing to the creation of the G20 Infrastructure Hub.

Mr. Hockey has had a long and distinguished career in public service. He first entered Parliament in 1996 as the Member for North Sydney and spent more than seventeen years on the front bench. Over the course of his parliamentary career, Mr. Hockey served as a Minister in a number of different portfolios including Financial Services, Small Business and Tourism, Human Services and Employment and Workplace Relations.

Previously, Mr. Hockey served as a banking and finance lawyer with a major Australian law firm. He graduated from the University of Sydney with Bachelor degrees in Arts and Law.

Mr. Hockey is married to Ms. Melissa Babbage, a company director and former investment banker. They have three young children Xavier, Adelaide and Ignatius.

  

THE HON. SECRETARY RICHARD SPENCER (Ret.)

Global Chair, Bondi Partners & Formerly the 76th Secretary of the United States Navy

Richard V. Spencer is Managing Director of Pallas Ventures an investment fund focusing on developing technologies that will have an impact on the National security mission. Prior to that he was the 76th Secretary of the Navy. He was sworn in to the office in August of 2017 and served until November of 2019. Previously he was Managing Director of Fall Creek Management LLC which focuses on value enhancement of private companies through capital investment and advice. He is former Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (NYSE-ICE) the leading electronic commodity futures exchange. He served in that capacity from November 2001 through January 2008. Richard was the President of Crossroads Investment Management LLC from 1998 to 2001, a leading venture capital and private equity fund-of-funds investment firm. He joined Crossroads after working on Wall Street for 16 years. During that period his responsibilities centered on investment banking services focusing on strategic advisory services and capital markets underwriting.

Mr. Spencer graduated from Rollins College in 1976 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in economics. Upon graduation from Rollins Richard joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the fleet until 1981. Mr. Spencer is a member of the board of directors of the Global Atlantic Financial Group, Aviation Safety Resources and Morpheus Space.

Erin Molan is an Australian TV and Radio presenter. She’s one third of the comedy breakfast show on 2DayFM ‘Hughesy, Ed and Erin’, is host of her own prime time show, ‘Erin’ on Sky News and is a columnist for the Daily Telegraph. 

Molan is also the proud designer and owner of a world first baby range, ‘By Erin’.

She is passionate about politics, national security and foreign affairs plus uses her platform to support countless charities and causes - including Bowel Cancer Australia, Dreams2Live4, Syd2Camera and Tresillian. 

Her own experience with online abuse led to her advocacy for new laws to protect Australians online. The ‘Online Safety Act’ or ’Erin’s Law’, as Prime Minister Scott Morrison refers to it, was passed in Parliament in 2021.

She spent over a decade as a sports and news presenter on Channel 9… including as the first female to host the NRL Footy Show and 2GBs Continuous Call Team.

Molan also competed in the World's most dangerous open ocean race, The Sydney to Hobart, on two occasions, the second as part of the World Record breaking winning team, Perpetual Loyal.

She travels the country sharing her story of persistence, resilience, failure and always ‘fronting up’ regardless of what’s thrown her way… plus ensuring negative experiences become a catalyst for change… always with a laugh along the way!

Erin considers inspiring and empowering the next generation of Australians as a genuine privilege and responsibility.
